The sustainable energy industry is one of the world’s fastest growth industries. The good news for landowners is that that sustainable energy producers need land for batteries, wind, and solar farms. Making sustainable investing a popular option of the future.
According to a report in the AFR and paraphrased. Renewables such as wind and solar are becoming cheaper than fossil fuels in most parts of the world and without storage of sustainable energy production, it will be harder for countries to significantly reduce their use of gas and coal-fired power plants and decrease the harmful effects of climate change.
As a solution, Australian state governments are attempting to create renewable energy zones (REZ). These zones or perhaps better described as “land reservations”. They are currently being earmarked along the length and breadth of each state. They will carry transmission lines to distribute large outputs of power generated by sustainable energy facilities such as solar, wind or hydrogen as often these sustainable energy facilities are in remote locations.
Currently, there are restrictions for sustainable energy companies connecting on the existing network. The existing networks were originally designed to carry energy from the single coal, hydro, or gas generators to the customer ie one way down the line.
Sustainable energy companies are looking for small metro sites for batteries. Solar and wind farms are looking for large greenfield sites. According to the Aust Energy Infrastructure Commission, a typical lease to windfarm in the will be around 25 years and the energy company pays a rental dependant upon the generating capacity of the turbine. Solar companies also dependant upon the access to full time sunlight.
